The 3 B's
There are 3 fundamental lines of development which we must bring into consciousness if we wish to live a balanced and integrated grounded-spiritual life. These are the lines of Being, Becoming and Belonging. To move forward on the spiritual path we must simultaneously work on each. These 3 lines are interwoven and interconnected, each thread an essential stitch, weaving together the marvelous tapestry of our wholistic selves.
The Line of Being
The line of Being is best described as the vertical line of connection with Spirit or The One. It is most commonly associated with what many think of as the entirety of spirituality - the focus, the goal, the practice - but, in fact, is only one part of the triad of spiritual practice. The line of Being is the line of stillness, of union with The Ground of All Being. It is the state of unity consciousness where all is ONE - undifferentiated Spirit. This line of development is at the heart of all spiritual practice - and rightfully so - as it informs and directs the other 2 lines of development. This competency of being is behind most of the spiritual practices of the East and is mainly actualized though the path of meditation. When we work on this line of development we are developing our capability and capacity to rest in the simplicity of being. We all have a direct line to the intelligence of stillness and a dormant faculty hard-wired into our system which enables us to merge with The Ground of All Being. We must simply learn to re-access these abeyant neural pathways. The attainment of this goal is frequently referred to as Nirvana, Samadhi, Moksha, as well as other names. How we were raised as children, what we were taught was most important or not important at all in life, can have a powerful impact on this spiritual competency. Our initial imprints relating to the world of Spirit greatly influence our current relationship with and --capacity for success within-- the path of Being, the world of spirituality and the path of union with the Divine.
The Line of Becoming
The line of Becoming is the gift of Creation. It is an intelligence, competency and skill in the fundamental reality of movement and is best represented by the unfolding process of Evolution. The line of Becoming represents each of our differentiated and unique growth and development, including that of the entire planet and cosmos. The line of Becoming encompasses the purpose of creation itself. If we were concerned only with the line of Being, there would be no reason to exist in material form at all. There would be nothing to do, no practice, no path, no Becoming. The purpose of walking the spiritual path while here on Earth, as souls in bodies, is to unite and integrate the soul's potential - the energy and light of divine being - within the structure of our lives within creation. Thus the evolutionary impulse to evolve, the call to walk the spiritual path is the expression of the line of Becoming. Of our Becoming more enlightened, evolved and embodied as Spirit in Matter. Our success in this domain is dependent on having a healthy relationship with "structure". How we were received and welcomed as children - as new souls, pure spiritual potential in human form - by our primary caregiver(s) greatly impacted and molded our relationship with Becoming - with landing our ("light") spiritual potential in structure and manifesting in the material world.
The Line of Belonging
The line of Belonging is an expression of our primate ancestry, and is directly tied to our primal need to belong to a greater community. This driving need to belong is hardwired into our physical and emotional landscape. To feel connected to others, to relate, to understand and to feel understood by others is an essential human need and a competency that we must develop over time as we ground more in our bodies and integrate our practice in daily life. Our relationship with Belonging is greatly influenced by our formative relationships with our primary caregiver(s). Through these initial experiences of Belonging we formed the blueprints, patterns and structures of how we relate to others. As a result of these primary connections, many of us unconsciously made decisions that affected and still affect our capacity to trust in others, retroactively impacting our ability to engage in true intimacy and impeding our sense of belonging in the world. Going back in time to these pivotal moments with the guidance and support of a highly skilled Spiritual Counselor can help heal old wounds and traumas and restore the original healthy expression of intimacy and belonging. The issues - the curriculum - in the realm of Belonging is mainly focused on interpersonal relationship dynamics.
These three pillars of Being, Becoming and Belonging are the tripod of spiritual development. When integrated and synthesized they support a healthy balanced wholistic way of living. By removing or ignoring any one of these lines the practitioner compromises the integrity and stability of their spiritual structure and may cause harm to themselves and/or others. These 3 pillars also influence each other in karmically dynamic ways. We may feel strong in one or two of these lines of development while being quite weak or unaware of our competency in the other(s). We may have an unhealthy tendency to focus on or feed one of these lines of development over another, or even at the detriment to another, because of a fear or trauma relating to the line we are avoiding. It's essential that we become aware of each of these pillars and develop a practice that simultaneously grows our competency in the realm of Being, Becoming and Belonging to actualize a stabilized wholistic awakening.
